When an individual doesn't speak up as someone is being harassed, they are only helping the bully. Statistics prove that, "56% of students have personally witnessed some type of bullying at school" (Bully Facts and Statistics). The ratio of students who have witnessed bullying to the amount of students who have done anything about it is a vast difference. In the book Night by Elie Wiesel the U.S. knew what was going on in Germany and knew they were murdering innocent people. The U.S. decided not to get involved into this situation which caused more people to be killed and, to an extent, bullied. When someone simply ignores bullying, they are doing nothing to help the victim in any way. In fact, they are only giving the bully a free pass to continue their torment. Choosing to block everything out and not make a difference will eventually cause even more problems for the bully victim.

I personally think that it is very important to stnad up for what you believe in and speak out to help others. This was a good way to relate what is happening in today's society to a book.
